Alberta J. Nichols

Alberta J. Nichols, age 83, of Columbia City, IN, passed away at 5:30 am on Saturday November 11, 2023, at The Waters, Columbia City.  Born on June 12, 1940, in Wolf Lake, IN, she was the daughter of Max and Letha (VanMeter) Gawthrop.

Alberta attended Larwill Schools and was a lifetime Whitley County resident.  She worked at Warner Electric as a materials handler and forklift driver for 40 years and also assisted at Kwik-Mart for 34 years.  Alberta attended The Chapel Church. She was always very kindhearted and willing to help others in need.  Alberta loved shopping and spending time with grandchildren in her free time.

Survivors include her children Deborah (Rick) Seymour of Columbia City, Annette (Jeff) Walters of Winona Lake, Sherrie (Bill) Gipson of Atkins, AR, Darla (Chris) Briggs of Fort Wayne, Deb Stoppenhagen of Churubusco, Dede Altimus of Port Charlotte, FL, and Sally Baldridge of Columbia City; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; siblings Marcia Gawthrop, Rose Tucker, and Fred Gawthrop, all of Columbia City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sue Myers, and companion of 47 years Joseph Hare.

A graveside service for Alberta will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday November 17, 2023, at Nolt Cemetery, Columbia City.

Memorial contributions in memory of Alberta may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Parkview Hospice.
