Gerald J. Johnson

Gerald J. Johnson, age 94, of Arcola, IN, passed away at 10:35 pm on Thursday November 23, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.  Born on April 23, 1929, in Arcola, he was the son of Fred and Irene (Rapp) Johnson.

Gerald attended Arcola High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.  He then proudly served his country in the Korean War.  On June 20, 1953, he married Mary Agnes Clark at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Arcola.  Gerald worked at Zollner Piston, Fort Wayne for 33 years as an inspector until his retirement in 1992.  He then worked at Meijer in Fort Wayne for 13 years before retiring in 2008.

Gerald was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he also served as an usher and a Eucharistic Minister.  He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Post #1906, American Legion Post #82, VFW Post #857, and Korean War Veteran’s Association.

Gerald was an avid traveler and enjoyed cruising, bird watching, flower gardening, watching Notre Dame football games, and visiting friends at Richard’s Restaurant.

Survivors include his children Cheryl (Dietmar) Knott, Annette Dickmeyer and Denise (Kent) Bowman, Gary Johnson, Kevin Johnson, David (Dawn) Johnson and Donald (Anne) Johnson; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Agnes Johnson, sister Mary Strahorn, brother Robert Johnson, and four grandchildren.

Friends may call on Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with a reciting of the Rosary beginning at 1:45 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday December 1, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 12305 Arcola Rd, Fort Wayne with calling one hour prior.

Burial will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Arcola, with Military Honors rendered by Whitley County Korean War Veterans.

Memorial donations may be given in his memory to Masses.
