Betty L. Johnson, 95, of Arcola, Ind. passed away at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Renaissance Village. Born September 4, 1922 in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Ralph Leonard and Bessie Mable (Cullers) Weston.
While growing up in Columbia City, Betty enjoyed spending her free time roller skating at Happy Valley. It was there where she met the man of her dream, Robert L. Johnson. After she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1940 and after Bob served in WWII, the two were married on May 26, 1946 at First Church of God in Columbia City. They made the town of Arcola home and never moved out of the area after.
During WWII, Betty was a secretary for a local insurance agent and then worked at GE in Fort Wayne. With over 30 years, she retired as a cook for Arcola's school. Betty and Bob loved to square dance together. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. At the age of 66, she taught herself even how to knit. She belonged to the Naomi Rebecca's of the Independent Odd Fellows organization until it was disbanded locally.
Survivors include her son, Ron (Vicki) Johnson and Steve (Julie) Johnson, both of Whitley County; grandchildren, Robin (Brian) More, Rachel (Joel) Porter, Stacy (Devin) Keener, Chad (Ashley) Johnson and Kyle (Cassie) Johnson; nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Johnson; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Fern Weston.
Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dennis Rowe of Dunfee Missionary Church officiating. Burial will follow at South Park (Annex) Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Memorial gifts may be given in her memory to the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department. Visit
