Charles Hill, 91, passed away on September 9th, 2014 at The Oaks Nursing Home in Columbia City, IN.He was born on June 28, 1923 in Jefferson County, Indiana to the late Matilda and Sylvester Hill.
Mr. Hill lived his formative years in Indianapolis, graduating from Emmerich Manual High School.He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in the European theater during WWII as a Corporal in the 549th Field Artillery Battalion.
On March 1st, 1944, he married the love of his life, Mary C. Rinderknecht.They moved to South Bend, in 1956 where he and Mary raised their three children.Mrs. Hill preceded him in death on January 17, 1994 just 1 months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Hill moved to Columbia City in April of 2012.He is survived by his daughter, Delores A. (Terrence) Aichele, of Homer Glen, Illinois; son, Daniel C. (Helen) Hill of Findlay, Ohio, and daughter, Janice M. (Robert) Barkley of Columbia City, Indiana, along with 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hill worked for and eventually became president of the Farmers Mutual Aid Association in Goshen, Indiana where he retired in 1988.He enjoyed golfing, fishing and loved to play cribbage with his buddies.
He was preceded in death by sisters: Dorothy Hill and Margaret Schattner and brothers: Bernard, Lawrence and Richard Hill all of Indianapolis, IN.
A celebration of life/wake for family and friends will be at the home of Janice and Robert Barkley, Loon Lake, IN, on September 21st from 1-4 pm and the American Legion Post 161, 133 E. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, IN on October 11th from 1-4 p.m.
