Doris E. Simmons

January 31, 1938 — May 9, 2014

Doris E. Simmons, 76, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 at her Goose Lake home. She was born on January 31, 1938 in Lodi, Ohio and was the daughter of Elmer K. and Cleo E. (Hite) Brown.

She spent her childhood in Lodi, Ohio before moving to Fort Wayne and finally settling in Columbia City, most recently at Goose Lake. She attended Central High School. She married James A. Simmons on August 30, 1968 in Columbia City. She was a homemaker for most of her life but was employed by Krogers in the Deli for 10 years before retiring in 2004. She was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 1906 in Columbia City. Her hobby was playing bingo and lots of it.

She is survived by son, James (Sandy) Simmons, Harrisburg, PA, Dennis D. (Toni) Simmons, Fort Wayne, Daniel Simmons, Monroe, MI, Bob Ewing, Columbia City, daughters, Tamera S. Simmons, Columbia City, Lisa Simmons, Churubusco,Diana Simmons, Columbia City; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; a sister Bonnie Hill of Lodi, Ohio and her beloved dog Mindy. Preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James A. Simmons who passed away January 14, 2013 and two children, Rebecca Buckles and Michael Simmons.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 5-8:00 p.m.at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the funeral home. Pastor Michael D. Dillon will be officiating. Burial will follow in the South Whitley Cemetery, South Whitley. Memorial bequests may be given in Doris memory to the American Cancer Society or to American Diabetes Association.
