E. Max Glassley, 89 of Columbia City and formerly of South Whitley passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 11:50 p.m.He was born October 12, 1921, the son of Russell L. and Winifred L. (Shriver) Glassley,in the same house in which he grew up in South Whitley. Mr. Glassley spent his entire lifetime in South Whitley until moving to Columbia City in 2003. He graduated from South Whitley High School with the Class of 1939. He first worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad then entered the United States Army in 1942, serving in the European Theatre as a Medic.In 1945 he received his honorable discharge.On Valentines Day 1948 he was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Hursey and preceded him in death on April 13, 1994.
He first joined the Indiana Excise State Police and then went to work for Stumps Printing for 10 years, South Whitley Police Department and retired in 1987 from Gripco, South Whitley as an inspector. He also served on the South Whitley Town Board for 10 years, the South Whitley Fire Department for 20 years where he also served as Fire Chief, member of the Whitley County FOP Lodge, Columbia City American Legion Post 98 and South Whitley V.F.W Post #2919, where he was a Past Commander and lifetime member. He was a lifetime member of the South Whitley United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his only child, Ronald L. (Beth) Glassley; 1 brother, Phil (Peggy) Glassley and 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Glassley, Tim Hartman, II and Tabitha (Jeffrey) Palmer all of Columbia City. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death, besides his wife, were his parents, Winifred L. and Russell L. Glassley and one infant brother.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 2:00 at the funeral home with Pastor David Wagner of the Collamer Christian Church officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by the Whitley County Korean War Honor Guard will immediately follow at South Whitley Cemetery. Memorial bequest may be given in Mr. Glassleys memory to the South Whitley Fire Department or Southern Care Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
