Edna Elizabeth Gamble, 96, of Goshen, Ind., passed away at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Maples of Waterford Crossing. Born February 12, 1921 in Washington Township of Whitley County, she was the daughter of John and Dora Nancy (Sievers) Kneller.
She graduated from Washington Center High School, Bachelors degree in Education from Huntington University, a Masters degree in Counseling from Purdue University and a Masters degree in Elementary Education from St Francis University. She completed the class work toward her doctorate at Michigan State University along with licensing as a reading specialist.She was honored as an outstanding Language Arts teacher while teaching in Illinois. On February 21, 1941 she married Duane O. Gamble in Picket County, Tenn. They raised their three children north of Huntington. She was a reading specialist in schools in Freeport and McHenry, Illinois and Huntington, Indiana. She retired with her husband to Winona Lake before moving to Goshen.In retirement she was Duanes active partner in Gamble Homes, a home construction company.
Edna was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ, the honorary educational sorority of Delta Kappa Gamma and had volunteered at LOVE, Inc. She also served on the Winona Lake Town Council for a number of years. She was an avid Cub and Boilermaker fan. While she did not invent the term of what happens at grandmas stays at grandmas, she did perfect it. Unbounded joy is how she viewed all the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughters, Pamela Thompson, of Columbia City and Paula (Robert) Shively, of Somerset, Pa.; son, Victor (Jo Rice) Gamble, of Mentone; grandchildren, Troy (Wendy) Gamble, of Noblesville, Shane (Allison) Gamble, of Fishers, Andrew Thompson, of Columbia City, Anne (Tom) Titus, of Coesse, Christine Shively, of Westfield and Sarah (Jarred) Romesburg, of Somerset, Pa.; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane in 2015; son-in-law, James Thompson; granddaughter-in-law, Erin Gamble; sisters, Viola Stephens, Lura Alexander, Maybelle Laub and Mary Kennedy; brothers, William Kneller, Edward Kneller, Donald Kneller and Jimmy Kneller.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday July 20, 2017 at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Eberhard Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to LOVE, Inc. of Huntington, which provides assistance to those in need.
