Emery Harold Schilling, age 103, of Columbia City, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Peabody Retirement Center, North Manchester.Born June 15, 1907 in Chester Township, Wabash County, he was the son of Mathias and Ida (Leonhardt) Schilling.
His first 4 years of school were spent at the one room Fruit School and after graduating from Bippus High School on April 18, 1925, he spent the next 10 years working on his father's farm helping his father and older brothers ditching and threshing small grain, using both steam engine and gas powered tractor outfits. On June 9, 1935 he married Anna P. Potts in Muncie. After moving to Washington Township in 1944, he raised registered Shorthorn Cattle and registered Duroc Hogs, selling and showing at district state sales and assisted his brother with general contracting.He was a former resident of Wabash and Huntington Counties moving to Wells County in 1943. Since 1944, he has resided on his 130 acre farm in Washington Township, Whitley County.
His memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church and Whitley County Historical Society. He was a member of the first Calf Club (Shorthorn) organized in Huntington County, the American Shorthorn Breeder's Association and the United Duroc Breeders Association.
Survivors include 2 sons, David L. (Sheila) Schilling of Columbia City and George Allen Schilling of Auburn; 6 grandchildren, Mark (Traci) Schilling, Brian (Melanie) Schilling, Margaret (Todd) Gilbert, Brad (Lisa) Schilling, Lana Schilling and Rod (Toua) Schilling; 15 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Emily, Jacob, Logan, Trevor, Taylor, Parker, Madelyn, Olivia, Jaidyn, Joshua, Joshua, Lillie, Alayna and Bria Ann. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna P. Schilling, sisters, Mable, Hattie, Martha, Betty Manshardt and Ruth Lackey and brothers, Howard, Clarence and Irvin Schilling.
Visitation is Sunday, December 12, 2010 from 2-7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service is Monday, December 13, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Ray, Visitation Pastor of North Manchester United Methodist Church and Pastor David Arnold of Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Nolt Cemetery, rural Columbia City.Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Schilling to the American Heart Fund.Please visit
