Ernest W. Gaff, age 91 of rural Columbia City passed away at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, IN. Born on September 25, 1918 in Noble County, he was the son of Clayton and Eldee (Conrad) Gaff. He attended Thorncreek Township School for 8 years and graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1937. On September 18, 1940, he married Emma J. Miller in Columbia City. He lived in Whitley County until 1942 moving to LaGrange and returning in 1952 to Whitley County living on Line Street. He has lived at his present home since 1960. He worked for United Telephone Company for 40 years and retired in 1981 as District Plant Superintendent. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and past business manager for the Union I.B.E.W.Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Gaff of Rome City; 4 sons, Harold E. Gaff of Fort Wayne, Everett E. (Jo Ellen) Gaff of Columbia City, James A. Gaff of Larwill and Ernest L. Gaff of Columbia City; 1 sister, D. Jane Studebaker of Columbia City and 1 brother, Walter (Doris) Gaff of Herrington, KS; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma J. Gaff, 2 sons, Lester and Kimey Gaff, 2 brothers, Calvin and Phil Gaff. Visitation is 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service is 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Johnson of Oak Grove Church of God, officiating with burial following at Merriam Christian Chapel, Merriam. Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Gaff to the donor's choice of charity. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
