HARLEY E. MANTLE

March 18, 1924 — May 5, 2011

Harley E. Mantle, age 87, of Kendallville, IN passed away at 6:49 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.Born March 18, 1924 in Columbia City, IN, he was the son of Solomon and Blanche D. (Worrick) Mantle.

He attended Washington Center School, Whitley County.He lived on Carroll Road, Allen County, prior to building a new home in 1955.In 1964, he moved to his current home in Kendallville.He proudly served in the United States Army from 1944-1946.On June 3, 1944, he married Valetta Adele Morrissey at Washington Center EBU Parsonage.For 34 years, he worked as a semi-driver for Ellis Trucking Company, Indianapolis, which sold to Navojo then to ABF, Fort Wayne.In 1985, he retired as a truck driver to farm full time retiring from farming in 1995.His memberships included American Legion, Avilla, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 5582 and Eagles Lodge 1906, Columbia City, Teamster Local 414 and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, Kendallville.

Survivors include a daughter, Ramonda Kay (Hugh) DeLong of Albion; grandchildren, Martin Mantle of Kendallville, Aron (Carrie) Mantle of Orland, Karla Mantle, Mary Day and Randall (Brandi) Reber all of Kendallville and Daniel DeLong of Albion; great-grandchildren; Benjamin Handshoe, Elizabeth Mantle, Zachary Mantle, David Rupert, Jr., Austin, Emily and Hunter Reber and Caydan DeLong; daughter-in-law, Jean Mantle of Kendallville; brother, Roger Mantle of Salt Lake City, UT.In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Arden DeWayne Mantle, infant daughter, Vickie Adele Mantle, brothers, Robert and Glenn Mantle, and sisters, Evelyn Bernardin, Wilda Ernst and Peggy Briggs.

Visitation is Sunday, May 8, 2011 from 2-6 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN.Funeral service is Monday, May 9, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bret Frymier of Asbury United Methodist Church officiating.Burial will follow at Nolt Cemetery, Columbia City.Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Mantle to the American Diabetes Association.Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
