Jack M. Pettigrew, age 87, of Columbia City and for the past year and half of Auburn, IN passed away at 10:27 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.Born on January 8, 1927 in Union Township, Whitley County, he was the son of Thomas Earl and Ella H. (Mossman) Pettigrew.
He graduated from Coesse High School with the Class of 1945.Two weeks after he graduated he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. After 17 weeks of combat training he was sent to the European Theater and worked in a U.S. military hospital in Paris, France. Upon returning home in 1946 he went into partnership with his father and brother into farming and the production of hybrid seed corn and becoming co-owner of Pettigrew & Sons Seed Corn Company, later becoming owner-operator of Pettigrew Seed, Inc.His son Bruce became a partner and for many years they were farming 1500 acres in the production of Pettigrew Seed Corn.On July 24, 1949 Jack married Garnet Adele Bridegam, at First Church of God. Jack and Garnetts family were Whitley County farmers for many decades.
He was a committee man with A.S.C.S. of Whitley County for 15 years and was sent to Washington DC on a task force meeting with A.S.C.S. on the national level.He served as a FHA Board of Director and served on the Union Township Advisory Board both for 3 years each.He was a member of First Church of God for over 60 years, serving his church as a Deacon, Trustee, Elder and Board Chairman.His travels included almost all of the United States, plus Hawaiian and Caribbean Islands, Puerto Rico, South America, Mexico, India, France and Germany.
Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, Garnet Adele Pettigrew, Auburn; 2 sons, Alyn M.(Beth) Pettigrew of Auburn and Bruce E. (Janelle) Pettigrew of Berryville, AR and 2 daughters Lorene A. (Neil) Perry and Lisa M. (Chris) Hackworth both of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and 1 sister, Marie Geiger of Columbia City. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Pastors Johnny McCallister and BrandonHoller officiating. Burial will follow at Coesse Lutheran Cemetery.Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Pettigrew to First Church of God, Columbia City.
