John R. DeWitt, 67, of Big Lake, near Columbia City, Ind., passed away at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home. Born September 18, 1949 in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Robert E. and Joanne A. (Sundsmo) DeWitt.
He attended Snider High School in Fort Wayne and received his Associates Degree from Ivy Tech in welding. On February 21, 1984, John married Kathy Goodwin. The two had met a few years prior when he came to her rescue at the apartment pool where they both were living. The two fell in love and were married in Ft. Wayne. In 1986, they moved from Ft. Wayne to Big Lake where they would spend the rest of their lives together. John retired from Meijer on Lima Road in Ft. Wayne in 2014 and was a member of Eagle Quest Church. He enjoyed fishing, swimming, being on his pontoon, riding motorcycles, going on nature walks, going to the movies, dancing, and setting on his dock at Big Lake and watch the sun go down with his wife by his side.
Survivors include his wife of over 32 years, Kathy DeWitt; brother, Randy (Analucia) DeWitt, of Fort Wayne; special niece, Juliana DeWitt and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
