JUNE L. SCOFIELD

June 15, 1912 — February 4, 2013

June L. Scofield, age 100, formerly of Columbia City, Indiana passed away at 3:19 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013 in Dunlap, Tennessee.Born June 15, 1912 in Rosemont, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Claus and Gertrude Estella (McWilliams) Rose, Jr.

June grew up in Stratton, CO graduating with the class of 1929 at the age of 17.In September, 1929she enrolled at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, until January, 1931 at which time returned to Stratton to teach in a one-room, eight grade country school north of Stratton.June started teaching third and fourth grades in Stratton in 1934.During this time she met the love of her life and future husband Gerald R. Scofield in 1936 when he came to teach in Stratton.They were married June 6, 1937 at her parents home and enjoyed 65 wonderful years together.It is a comfort and a blessing to know that they are together again.

In 1941 they moved to Grand Junction, CO where Jerry was employed at Mesa Junior College while June served as a substitute teacher and secretary at Grand Junction High School.Jerry was hired by the University of Colorado in 1946 and they moved to Boulder CO.In 1948 Jerry and June bought a Sporting Goods Store in Boulder.They owned and operated Gamelines Sporting Goods until 1974 when they decided it was time to retire.During their retirement they traveled, played golf and enjoyed life to the fullest until Jerrys passing in 2002.

In 2004, she moved to Columbia City to be with her daughter.The slower pace took some getting used to, but she met some wonderful people during her time there.She attended First Presbyterian Church prior to its closing, joined the Old Bats in Red Hats and had the honor of being their oldest Red Hatter, and joined a wonderful weekly Bible Study Class at the United Methodist Church and felt honored that they included her in going for coffee afterwards.She was so happy when she found people who played her beloved game of bridge and they met weekly at the Senior Center.Her very special friend and caretaker Carolyn (George) Rubrake made sure she was always spoiled and saw to her needs at any given time.

In 2009 she accompanied her daughter to Tennessee.June was affectionately known as Grandma to everyone she met. While in Tennessee she was able to continue her vanity days and going out to eat weekly.She thoroughly enjoyed going to the high school basketball games in which 5 of her step great grandchildren participated and felt honored to have a designated seat. Basketball was dear to her heart and each game brought fond memories of days past for her.June frequently made comments and shared stories of her husbands playing days and coaching days.

June was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Boulder for 67 years, serving as an elder, possibly the first female elder the church had and was a member of various Womens Circle Groups at the church over the years.She served as a Pink Lady at Boulder Community Hospital, was a faithful member of the Buffalo Bells, and a member of the Boulder Country Club since 1947. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and going to CU football and basketball games.

She is survived by her son Jerry Scofield, II of San Juan Capistrano, CA; daughter Mary Rose (Dan) Cartwright of Whitwell, TN; grandchildren, Tracey, Scott (Sophia) & Kristen (Scott); 6 great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren.In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by brothers, Justus Claus Rose, John Boyd Rose, and sister Maye Rose Blodgett.

A visitation will be held on March 12, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Boulder, 1820 15th Street, Boulder, CO.A Funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend John Hess officiating.Burial will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Avenue, Boulder, CO.Memorials may be given in memory of June to the First Presbyterian Church of Boulder.Envelopes will be available at the church.
