Kenneth "Kenny" Kimpel, 71, of Columbia City, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Parkview Regional Medical Center. Born April 6, 1949 in DeKalb County, he was the son of J.J. and Berdena (Souder) Kimpel.
He grew up in the Butler area and graduated from Hamilton High School. Along with helping his father farm, he had been a plumber and a truck driver. After moving to Whitley County in 1978, he worked for Redman Plumbing & Heating and retired from Dana in 2012. On September 2, 1989, he married Janice Zumbrun. He was a member of the NRA and Columbia City Eagles. Kenny enjoyed being on the water and fishing at where he lived at on Tri-Lakes. He liked shooting guns, hunting, being involved with Western reenactments and collecting Alice-Chalmers tractors. He took great pride in his tall tomato plants that he grew and his salsa, beets and homemade candies will be missed. Kenny was also an amateur "mixologist" and enjoyed creating new jello shots, pudding shots and most recently was experimenting with adult popsicles.
Kenny is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Rob) Zerkle; sons, Jeff (Chrys) Kimpel and Jeremy (Leah) Kimpel; brother, Denny (Linda) Kimpel; grandchildren, Samantha Kimpel, Dravin Kimpel, Darianne Kimpel, Nicole Kimpel, Elijah Zerkle and Robert Kimpel; nieces, Kimi Kimpel and Lori Kimpel; and nephew Brad Kimpel. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife of 25 years, Janice Kimpel in 2015.
A gathering of family and friends will be 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, August 7, 2020 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. With the current Executive Order, face masks are required for attendance. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lance Stiver officiating.
