Mable I. Bunny Herrick, 84, of Columbia City, Ind. passed away at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at her daughters home at High Lake. She was born in Fort Wayne on October 1, 1926 to Earl and Lola (Hitchcock) Rabbitt.
She was raised in Indiana and graduated with the Class of 1944 from Rome City High School. Following her marriage to Virgil N. Herrick on January 27, 1944 they established their home in North Manchester. They moved to Colorado where she resided for 7 years and from 1967 to 1995 they lived in Larwill, she moved from there to Columbia City following the death of her husband.She has also lived in Fort Wayne, Wabash, Kendallville and Missouri.
She most recently worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter but she also served as a volunteer at Parkview Whitley Hospital where she served as president of the volunteers.She was also a member of the Columbia City VFW Post 5582, serving as District and Post president.Other volunteer positions included the Whitley County Literacy Council and the YMCA.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Carol Sue Smith of Chugwater, Wyoming and Sandra Louise Slone of Albion; 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil on November 4, 1994; and brothers, Robert, Charles and Richard Rabbitt.
Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 from 9-11 a.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City.Donations in memory of Mrs. Herrick can be made to the Whitley County Literacy Council or the VFW Children's Home.Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
