Someone who had a contagious smile, lived in the moment, that was also stubborn, yet caring, are just a few ways to describe Matt Marty.
A few events in history that occurred in 1992 include the Great Chicago Flood of the downtown Loop, Space Shuttle Endeavor made its maiden voyage, the Mall of America opened, and on September 24, 1992 in Columbia City, John and Brenda (Bishop) Marty welcomed the birth of Matthew Alan Marty.
Matt was the middle child and was very competitive with his older brother Eric younger brother Chris. Mom's nickname for Matt was MattMan as a child he didn't want to wait for new paint in the bedroom so he colored the wall with crayon, demonstrating his early artistic abilities! He played soccer and graduated with honors, from Columbia City High School with the Class of 2011 then received his Associate's Degree from Ivy Tech. Matt was the manager of his parent's north Subway Store in Columbia City. He was great with customers and employees alike, and they all loved him. Matt was a real people pleaser and wanted to make it a fun time whenever he was working. He also aspired to have his own Subway store someday.
Matt was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church's youth group and Sunday school. Always very active, he was a Tae-Kwan-do green belt, enjoyed cooking, Motocross, animals, soccer, swimming, kids, the outdoors, helping others, telling jokes and was a genuine sports fanatic. His favorite teams included I.U. basketball, Philadelphia Eagles football, L.A. Dodgers baseball, and Chicago Blackhawks hockey. When it came to music, Matt listened to Tom Petty and Elton John the most, and for movies it had to be Indiana Jones or any other action movies. He also took a big interest in the Discovery channel and liked to share what he had learned from watching, but there was always time to work in a game of Madden or EA Sports video games. Matt also enjoyed family vacations to the beach, water parks, Smokey Mountains, and Assembly Hall. In September 2018, Matt along with his dad and brothers all took a trip to St. Louis to see a Dodgers baseball game. Family gatherings around the holidays were special times as well, especially at Christmas while playing the rob your neighbor game and at Easter for egg hunts.
Family and friends alike where shocked to hear that Matthew Alan Marty, 26, of Columbia City, Ind., passed away at 5:58 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Parkview Regional Medical Center. He will always be remembered and the hearts of those who loved and knew him so well!
