PHIL EDWIN GEIGER

January 7, 1930 — December 4, 2008

Phil Edwin Geiger, age 78, passed away at 12:09 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. Born on January 7, 1930 in Whitley County, IN he was the son of Carl Leroy and Grace Mae (Wood) Geiger.He graduated with the Class of 1947 from Columbia City High School. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Navy. On June 12, 1953 he married Jo Ann Moyer at the Naval Station in Norfolk, VA. A lifetime Whitley County resident and Columbia City resident since 1955, he owned and operated Geiger's Service Station in Columbia City since January, 1955. A volunteer fireman with the Columbia City Fire Department for 50 years, he served as Fire Chief from 1967 to 1976 and October, 1985 to August, 1989. His memberships include American Legion Post #98 for over 50 years and the Sheriff's Merit Board since January 1, 1972. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jo Ann Geiger of Columbia City; daughters, Sally Ann (Tim) Spillers and Catherine E. "Katie" Geiger both of Columbia City; sister, Trella Mae Geiger of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Bruce (Patti) Geiger of Collins; granddaughters, Megan Sue and Danielle Elizabeth Spillers and Kyley Ann Geiger-Simmons all of Columbia City; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Edwina "Winnie" Sue Geiger, brothers, Bud and Russell Geiger and his mother-in-law, Lois Roberts.Visitation is Sunday, December 7, 2008 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral service is Monday, December 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with 1 hour of calling prior to service at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Rowe of Dunfee Missionary Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery, 402 East Ellsworth Street, Columbia City, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Geiger to the Columbia City Fire Department Candy Fund or Dunfee Missionary Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
