Phyllis J. Herendeen, 93, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at The Hearth at Sycamore Village. Born May 16, 1926 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Lawrence "Bob" J. and Odetta (Clingerman) Coverstone.
Phyllis grew up in Columbia City and enjoyed playing with her friends on Elm Street. She graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1944. Following high school, she worked at Yontz's and at the Ration Board. Through mutual friends, she was introduced to a young gentleman from Huntertown. On October 15, 1948, Phyllis married William D. Herendeen at First Church of God in Columbia City. She and Bill would welcome three children into their hearts and home, Deb, Dave and Jeff. As her three children were in school, she went to worked at Sears in Columbia City for 23 years and retired in 1992.
Phyllis was a member of the Community Bible Church, she loved having family gatherings, taking walks and taking car rides with Bill. She was crafty, an excellent cook, enjoyed baking and her homemade candies will be missed. Phyllis was a very loving, kind, caring and passionate lady. She had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good water fight. She will be missed dearly by her family.
Survivors include her children, Deb (Dave) Herron of Columbia City, Dave (Deb) Herendeen of Larwill and Jeff (Lora) Herendeen of Columbia City; six grandchildren, Cami (Mike) Hippenhammer, Cory (Gia) Herron, Abbey Herendeen, Sarah (Wes) Wolfe, Jacob (Brittany) Herendeen and Isaac (Tasha) Herendeen; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Barb Coverstone; and brother, George Coverstone.
A gathering of family and friends will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2019 at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor John Cummings officiating. Burial will follow at Thorn Cemetery.
