Richard Arthur Cullers

May 11, 1944 — May 4, 2018

A very caring personality, a great sense of humor, and a bit obsessive compulsive, but very focused and attentive to details are just a few ways to describe Richard Cullers. A few pieces of history that occurred in 1944 include President Franklin Roosevelt being elected to his fourth term, Benjamin Green inventing sunscreen for soldiers, later founding the Coppertone Company, and on May 11, the welcoming of Richard Arthur Cullers, born in Fort Wayne, IN, the son of Claude Cullers and Betty (Cullers) Baker.

Richard spent his entire childhood in Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1962. He then went on to attend Fort Wayne Business College, prior to entering the United States Air Force, serving for 4 years as Airman First Class during the Vietnam War, stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. In his youth Richard square danced at the Eagles Lodge. As a young adult he was a roller skating champion and also a great mechanic. Richard worked at Wheelers Root Beer Stand when he met his future wife, Sandra K. Cozad, a car hop there. Soon after they started dating and then later got married at Grace Lutheran Church on May 15, 1965, one of the greatest days of his life. Two other very important days were when his children Brent and Lisa were born.

Richard was the kind of guy that would do anything for his family and friends. He never gave up on anything and did not want to throw anything away. If you asked Richard how he was doing you were sure to get a "Swell!" or "OOOK, Fine!" in his humorous manner.

Richard was a communication technician with AT&T for 30 years retiring in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion Post #98 and a former member of Eagles Lodge #1906.

Richard loved going to Las Vegas and playing video poker. He also enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards, spending time with his grandchildren, and his McDonald's group friends.

Brent can recall his dad coming to all his baseball games in high school and being the only one on the bleachers in the rain smiling as he came to bat. Richard loved watching all sports, with his favorite teams including the Chicago Cubs, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Hoosier Basketball, Atlanta Braves, and the Indiana Pacers. Some favorite shows he watched were Cheers, Mash, and his favorite Big Bang Theory.
