Shirley Fay Friend

Shirley Fay Friend, age 81 of Kendallville, IN and formerly of Columbia City, passed away Thursday June 6, 2024, at her residence.  Born on February 22, 1943, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of John and Mary Ann (Maples) Carroll.

Shirley attended local schools before she went to work in private home health care for over 20 years until her retirement in 2007.  On April 19, 1971, she married Larry Friend in Churubusco.  

Shirley enjoyed playing bingo and would recruit whoever she could to play with her.  She also loved her dogs and doing anything she thought of in the moment.

Survivors include her children Rob Friend of Kendallville and Millisa (Michael) Burdette of Ligonier; grandchildren Shayna Daniels, Tyler Smith, Mitchell Burdette, Marcus (Samantha) Burdette Michael (Britany) Burdette, and Daniel (Desirea) Burdette; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings Barbara (Alan) Gilbert and Wanda Carroll, both of Fort Wayne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Burt Sinclair Hawk, Jr. and Larry Friend, sons Steve Hawk, Jeff Hawk, and Jackie Hatfield, and grandson Brandon Hart.

Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday June 12, 2024, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, where friends may call from 3:00-6:00 pm prior to service.

Memorial contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to Whitley County Humane Society.
