Verne A. Diffendarfer, Jr., 99, formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away Friday, February 2, 2018 at Trident Hospital, North Charleston, S.C. Born December 18, 1918 in Columbia City, he was the son of Verne A. and Anna Laura (Carter) Diffendarfer.
He was raised in Columbia City and moved Fort Wayne in 1954. 2010. He completed his formal education in the public elementary schools of Columbia City and graduated Columbia City High School with the Class of 1937. On October 12, 1940, he married Hilda M. Chapman. Verne served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in WWII from 1943-1946. He retired in 1981 from the U.S. Postal Service where he was instructing postal clerks in the Fort Wayne postal system. He was a member of American Legion Post 98, Columbia City. He volunteered for the Ft. Wayne VA Hosp. for 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda M. Diffendarfer; daughters, Zoe (Larry) Ann Wortinger, of Tellico Plains, Tennessee and Paula (Frank) Rader-Glover, of North Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Bryan Wortinger, Shawn Wortinger; granddaughter, Jessica Williams; and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Carter Diffendarfer brother, David Diffendarfer.
A private burial will take place at Christian Chapel Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. Visit
