Viola "Vi" M. Van Meter, 66, of Columbia City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at her home. Born June 12, 1955 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Gilbert M. and Rose E. (Quinn) Hiscutt.
Growing up in Whitley County, Viola attended Columbia City Joint High School. On March 31, 1973, she married Melvin C. Van Meter, Jr. Viola had worked at various factories over the years and retired from Square D in Huntington in 2012. She had attended Community Hope Church in Columbia City.
Viola loved being with her family and enjoyed reading, and being out and about. She found relaxation being outdoors and soaking in all that nature had to offer. Viola will be known for her happy go lucky spirit and goofy sense of humor that she had. She was always positive and upbeat. Her smile that could light up any room will always be missed by those who know her.
Survivors include her loving husband of 48 years, Melvin Van Meter Jr.; son, Melvin Van Meter, III; daughter, Naomi (Michael) Mertens; brothers, Anthony Wayne (Joyce) Hiscutt and Alvin Hiscutt; five grandchildren, Natasha Mertens, Sidney (Erin Lewellen), Catherine Van Meter; Trinity Van Meter and Franklin Mertens. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, Patrick Hiscutt; brother, Gilbert Hiscutt; and sister-in-law, Darlene Hiscutt.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm, Monday, December 27, 2021 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be given in memory to the Humane Society of Whitley County or Dyslexia Institute of Indiana.
