The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers, at no cost, a Government headstone or marker for eligible deceased veterans, regardless of date of death or burial location worldwide. For those who passed on or after Nov. 1, 1990, VA may replace existing private markers. Flat markers in granite, marble, bronze, and upright headstones in granite and marble are available, with style consistent with existing monuments. Niche markers are also provided for columbaria. In national, state veterans', or military cemeteries, cemetery officials order based on provided inscription details. Spouses and dependents are ineligible unless buried in such cemeteries. Though the headstone or marker is free, private cemetery placement and associated fees are the applicant's responsibility.
